Technology – An Introduction to Technology

Technology is the study of how things are produced or how they operate. Technological change occurs continuously as new technologies emerge and as older ones become obsolete. It has affected every aspect of our lives from transportation to communication. With new technologies comes new ways of doing things, which usually necessitate even greater levels of innovation. The field of technology studies seeks to bridge the gap between science and technology, especially as it applies to human affairs.


Technology is often defined by a combination of its theoretical study and application. Technological change occurs as a result of advances in technology for the better. Technological change is also a product of economic development and social progress. Technological systems, processes, and organizations are used to meet societal needs and increase the productivity of a country or organization. Technological progress is usually a product of human ingenuity and the application of scientific knowledge.

Technology pertains to the applications of science and technology to the different fields of human activity. Technologists may be involved in the development of new products and procedures or improve on existing ones. Technological change is sometimes a natural outgrowth of economic activity and society or driven by an unforeseen impact upon human welfare. Technological change can affect almost any area of life. It includes computer sciences, engineering, communications, information, and physical sciences.

Technology has various concentrations. Many areas of technology are applied sciences concerned with specific industries or subfields, while others deal more with the broad areas of technology. Technological engineers apply the knowledge of technology to specific fields, developing new products or processes. In applied technology, technologists are involved in the design, development, and use of equipment and systems that are economically or qualitatively useful to a specific industry or setting.

Applied technology can also include computer sciences, information technology, health informatics, industrial design, and applied physics. Some areas of applied science are computer science, including computer systems, database management, numerical analysis, and software engineering; applied physics, which encompass a variety of scientific disciplines; and health informatics, which study the design, implementation, and evaluation of medical records and practices. In all these areas, technologists must apply their knowledge of technology to specific fields of activity.

A Bachelor’s degree in a program that focuses on applied technology offers students the skills they need to compete in today’s job market. Graduates will have acquired both general technical skills and an ability to communicate their ideas in a clear and compelling manner. They will have gained valuable practical experience and developed the abilities to conduct thorough research and analysis.
